In the 11th century, the region was conquered by the Seljuk Turks and became part of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. In the 12th century, the region was conquered by the Kingdom of Georgia, which was founded by the Bagrationi dynasty. During this period, the Georgian language and culture flourished and the country became a major regional power. In the 16th century, the region was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and became part of the Ottoman province of Georgia. In the 18th century, the region was conquered by the Russian Empire and became part of the Russian Empire. In 1918, Georgia declared its independence from Russia and became the Democratic Republic of Georgia. In 1921, the country was occupied by the Soviet Union and became part of the Soviet Union. In 1991, Georgia declared its independence from the Soviet Union and became an independent nation. Today, Georgia is a democratic republic with a population of over 4 million people. It is a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the World Trade Organization.
